After helping a friend move, we decided to head here for a quick bite to eat and, most importantly, margaritas. (The frozen raspberry margarita is a definite thirst quencher!) We popped in on a busy Saturday evening, but our drinks and food came out in no time at all, and everything was delicious. They offer your standard options in a friendly environment. All in all, Rio Grande is my new favorite Mt. Pleasant option for a quick Mexican fix!

Standard Mexican menu, standard prices., located in a nice shopping area, decent service...so so taste. Wasn't disappointed, but not a wow experience for a first visit. Looks like they can handle large group sizes pretty good. I think the best, friendliest Mexican restaurants are in North Chuck and Goose Creek...sorry

As someone who has been to this restaurant for lunch many times I am not impressed with it at all. The food is ok but the service is very poor more often than not. My most recent visit started out alright, though our waitress seemed annoyed at our request to sit outside (it was beautiful and warm outside), maybe because she had to wipe the table off and towel dry a few of the chairs that were wet from the rain yesterday (not sure why that wasn't already done, as I said, it was a beautiful warm day). After we were seated things steadily declined. First, my friend ordered water and was brought a sweet tea which she thanked the waitress for but advised her of the mixup. The waitress was obviously irritated and went off to grab the water, leaving the sweet tea om the table which my friend decided to start sipping on since she was thirsty. The waitress then returned and wordlessly removed the sweet tea from the table and left the water instead and went back inside, which came across as incredibly rude. Then, another of our group's order was incorrect because it got mixed up with someone else in the restaurant. Next, we requested a refill on our 2 baskets of chips only to be brought 1 basket and no salsa for the entire table to share (side note there ended up being a strange looking hair at the bottom of that new basket... coincidence?). Also, another of our party had almost her entire plate of food left and had to stop the waitress grabbing it out from in front of her while she was eating to take it away and even after that she was never offered a box for her leftovers, which she ended up wrapping in the aluminum foil the tortillas came in. And lastly when we requested drink refills we were given to-go cups instead which said pretty clearly "ok, you ate your meal, you can leave now". Oh and almost forgot to mention that half of our group was feeling sick a few hours after our meal. I for one will never be eating here again. All that being said, I would just like to add that this is just my opinion based on my experience with this place. Please don't hesitate to try them out for yourself and form your own opinion ;)

First time here, we were looking for something yummy & easy for a mid week dinner... Huge selection of food & good drink specials. I had the carnitas Sopes, it was good but needed tomatoes or a salsa of some kind. It was Only $5 & Totally big enough for dinner. Margaritas tasted a little watered down so only had one.

This is a great option for a quick meal. By far not the best Mexican in Charleston but it is decent, service is quick, a prices are good. We always get the fajitas for two. It provides more than enough for two hungry people and leftovers for the next day. On the rare occasion we have branched out the items have been good. We never had any issues with service and rarely have to wait to get a table. On a Friday night in Mount Pleasant that's a real perk!

Pretty darn good! I was shocked at how inexpensive it was very. Service was prompt, food was hot and plentiful. If I'm craving a 4,000 calorie plate of Mexican food, this will def be my spot!

Food was good, place was nice and clean, prices good, service could have been more focused maybe the server was new? Make sure waiter repeats order so you get what you asked for.M argarita were very tasty! Chimichangas excellent! Would defiantly recommend and go back.

Service was good. Fast. Place is clean... I'm a taco guy soon had the el pastor- pretty good. Portion was massive...

This place somehow gets progressively worse every time I go. I liked it at first, but the food has gone down hill. I'm sure some things are good and I know they are known for their drinks, but their chimichanga leaves something to be desired. The service is ok. Overall, not so good.

When the hubs and I are looking for Americanized Mexican food, which is often, we always think to come to Rio Grande first. Staff are friendly & efficient, the food is good & cheap, and the beers & 'ritas are plentiful. What more can you ask for from your local mexi joint?

Some of the best Mexican food I've had in awhile. A bunch of us from work got here a little bit before it opened (1045) and we were eating by 11. Though it was suspiciously quick, everything was great. Everyone enjoyed their meal and it wasn't too bad at all on the wallet. I'd defiantly come back if I were in the area.

Love this little Mexican place. It the typical shopping center Mexican place. Free chips and salsa, cheap menu, friendly staff, family friendly but also a good place to go with friends.

This place was great. Coming from California, I was worried I wouldn't be able to get good Mexican Food again, but is hit the spot! I had the grilled tacos with El Pastor meat, simply amazing flavor, great salsa too. Defineatly will go back!!

I moved to Mt. Pleasant a few months ago, and I was on a search for an amazing mexican restaurant. Yay, I found it! I'm picky when it comes to Mexican food, everyone who was with me loved it too! The search is over!

I used to LOVE this place for lunch. The last 2 times my family has eaten there for dinner, however, we have gotten sick. Very sick. The servers are also some of the rudest I have had in my life as well. They are completely not interested in you, will yell at you if they mix up an order and are not interested in working for even the most basic tip. The plus is they do make a mild salsa if the regular one is too hot for you. You just have to ask for it!

How's your work day going? Not good? Cure your ills with a visit to Rio Grande. Their lunch specials are huge, delicious, and nap inducing. Couple the food with one of their big boy Dos Equis ambers and you'll head back to work either drunk, asleep, or both. Not that I would ever do such a thing, but I've just heard from friends... This is classic Americanized Mex food. So huge you curse it's name as you waddle out the door, so good you come back every Friday. Go ahead... swim laps in the Dos Equis, do the backstroke through the ground beef, and sooth your sore muscles in the hot queso. Rio Grande don't mind. Ellos están allí para ayudarte.

A nice Mexican style restaurant which has good food and good service. All the elements of the food seemed fresh and homemade. Overall, a modest priced restaurant that is nice for a casual meal with family or friends.

Margaritas were the worst I've had in along time. The rice tasted like instant rice and dried carrots and peas. The mole sauce tasted like BBQ sauce. We couldn't even finish the meal. Service was ok. Food was bland every thing tasted instant and cheap. We won't be back.

Entered for carryout, was sent to bar to order. Placed order for vegetarian enchilada at $8.99. Asked for rice omitted and replaced with any kind of vegetables. Received one enchilada of sloppy beans, a slight smatter of lettuce and a few diced tomatoes, and a pan of more sloppy unseasoned beans with slight "marbling" of melted cheese. No vegetables, no seasoning other than odd sweet taste like sugar added to beans. . The bill came in a greasy folder missing its credit card pocket; no pen. Based on that and the unappetizing food, I ate a few bites at office and threw the rest out. Few if any others at the place except four people at the bar.

One of our (my husband and I) favorite places to stop in for a quick bite. It is close to our house and definitely satisfies our cravings for good mexican food. My husband has tried many items and enjoyed each one. I usually go for the fajitas and love them. We really enjoy the fresh salsa and queso, and we usually end up filling up on them before we even get our meals! Service is usually quick and friendly. Worth trying if you're in the area.

I just moved to South Carolina from California and I was itching for some decent Mexican food. I left very much satisfied. Sat down and was immediately greeting by a friendly waitstaff and a basket of hot chips and salsa. Ended up having a wet burrito. Portions were huge, definitely worth my dollar.

The food was no better nor worse than any other Mexican restaurant in the US. The decor was very minimal with dim lighting and TVs blaring. The service was very slllooowwww, even as we made repeated eye contact as she stood staring at the computer. The best part - it's conveniently located to I-526 & numerous sub-divisions.

Came here based on some positive reviews. When we walked in, the air conditioning was either not on or not working. The hostess seemed very disinterested in having to be there and couldn't muster any enthusiasm for us being there either. She sat us in a section where a plug-in fan could blow on us... But we were already not "feeling it." No waiter had yet appeared, so we got up and left. Can't say what the food was like, but what we did experience left a lot to be desired. We will not be back.

Let's get a couple things straight...I was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, traveled down to San Antonio frequently, and have dined on some of the best Mexican food to be found outside of Mexico. For 23 years of my life, Mexican food made up a solid 1/3 of my diet. I have found that the only people that like the food here have never had real Mexican food. My husband and I came here during lunch hour on a Saturday and we were two of only four customers in the entire restaurant (that should be enough of a warning sign on it's own). I ordered the shrimp quesadilla and what I received was more of a burrito. Quesadillas are supposed to be crispy on the outside, and melted on the inside - easy to pick up and dip into salsa or sour cream. The tortilla was not crisp, whatsoever, there was hardly any cheese on the inside of the "quesadilla" and the ingredients included borderline-raw broccoli...who puts broccoli in a traditional burrito, let alone a quesadilla? Extremely off-putting. I had a total of maybe 4 shrimp in my entire quesadilla and on top of that I paid close to eleven dollars for this entree. Oh, I forgot the subpar "refried beans" and "spanish rice". I'm not even of Mexican heritage and I can make better rice and beans than what was on my plate. Come on now... That really says something. My husband had the chili relleno, which is a staple Mexican dish. It had what looked like a sliver of chili on the plate, instead of an entire chili, which is how the dish is traditionally and widely known to be served. He described the glop on top of the chili sliver as "mystery meat sauce", which portrays the rest of his plate on it's own. I'm just not sure who was in charge of the kitchen or the quality of food being served that day, but I am sure that they don't know what they're doing. On top of that, my husband and I were originally seated by our hostess in a booth directly next to the restroom, when the restaurant was almost entirely empty...really? I can't be the only one that does not like smelling bathroom "odors" every time the door swings open. We promptly and politely asked the waitress if we could get a booth closer to the bar, so we could watch the football game and she was very kind to oblige. The service was great - staff was very kind, quick, and polite. No bad marks in that direction, we were just entirely dissatisfied with our food. We won't be coming back in the future.

Standard issue Americanized Mexican food. Usual menu of Speedy with Rice and the long list of "combos." The salsa is good and usually has a little heat to it. If you are looking for quick Mexican for a decent price then this is a good option.

  • Michael K.

I am not a big fan. The food here leaves way too much to be desired. I did not even think the complimentary salsa was any good, and my fajitas were bland and the onions and peppers were hardly cooked. Just poor execution. The charleston area has plenty of options for mexican, and this is hardly worth it.

  • Eric D.

I've eaten here several times over the past year, and when we can actually get a waiter to show up the food is pretty good, and dirt cheap. But the service is usually horrendous! Overall it's not bad, but don't go if you are in a rush.

Family and friends eat here almost every Friday, sitting out on the patio whenever the weather allows. The bottomless basket of chips and the accompanying salsa are great, if you desire something different than salsa try the excellent guacamole or the beef and cheese dip. The wife and I order the Organic margaritas, a little extra money but not quite as "green" as the frozen regular margaritas. My regular favorites to eat are the Mexican pizza, only 8.99 or the Carnitas Enmoladas, more food than I can eat. If you are looking for something different, try the mexican chicken soup, a delicious on grandmas recipe. The staff are generally very attentive, making sure your drink and chip basket are never empty.

I am so pleased with myself for coming here tonight. Rio Grande definitely satisfied my craving for chips and salsa and then some. The salsa always tastes spicy and fresh & there was plenty of crispy chips to spare. While I've had the vegetable fajitas my last 3 visits, I tried the #5 Vegetarian Dinner tonight which came with a Veggie Burrito, Cheese Enchilada, Rice, and Refried Beans. Everything was delicious! This place is a definite step above most cheap Mexican restaurants! And oh how I love that they have circular crushed ice! The last time I had a margarita I thought it was weak but as far as food and service go, this place rules.

My wife and I like to go here after church on Saturday nights. The food and service never fail to please. We hadn't been in a while and went again last night. It was a pleasure to walk in and remember how good it is. We usually order from the special menu. This evening, we didn't. I ordered a grilled steak taco salad and my wife ordered a pair of quesadillas - on carnitas (pork) and one chicken. I ate every bit of the taco salad; even though I had planned on not eating the shell. It was a good taco salad and the steak was seasoned just right. My wife only ate one of her quesadillas. They were huge. I'll have the other one for lunch today. Like most Mexican restaurants, they were spot on with the chips and salsa; even offering to refill both when they were about 3/4 done. Most dinners are in the $8-15 range lunch is generally under $10. We got out the door for ~$24 including tax and tip.

We tried this place on a lark, after seeing how busy Pawley's Porch was, and I was very happy that we did! They've got a great menu, and the pork carnitas are the best I've ever had. Their table salsa is great, and they've got $6 fishbowl margaritas that are damn good! The combination platters all look great, and they've got great prices. It's definitely a family spot, more so that Juanita Greenberg's, but it's also a very different style of Mexican food, here. Not that that's a bad thing - the food is perhaps less authentic Mexican than Juanita's, but it's just as delicious! Oh, quick note - Don't park on the side of the restaurant, next to the wine bar. We had a beer truck block us in one evening, and won't make that mistake again.

Since moving to charleston, we have ate at some amazing places. Today I decided to go Mexican food after my hair appt. I haven't had Mexican since leaving Atlanta were I ate it every week. This is a great place I had the number 14 combo plate. It was delicious but I would have like a little more flavor in the beef . I will come back!

  • Bruce K.

Decent, but average Americanized Mexican food. I went with the seafood quesadillas - one crab and one shrimp - and the shrimp one was the winner by far. There were plenty of grilled shrimp in there that were cooked perfectly, as opposed to the crab one that was more stuffing than crab. No worries, the chips were nice and crisp and the salsa was cool and spicy. Service was good.

Just left the restaurant the food was awesome, plentiful and the service great. The hostess could use some personality but I'd go back in a heartbeat. The best Mexican restaurant we have found in Mt pleasant

Came for lunch -- loved it, now come all the time. Lunch specials are great. Good atmosphere, nice views from some of the back tables of the outdoors and some water. Good service, sincere wait staff. Try the steak fajatia's... they are wonderful with salad and rice for $5 on special sometimes, $8 other times ? i think, maybe $6.50. But it is worth it. Yummy.

Best Mexican place we've found in Mount Pleasant. Fresh and flavorful ingredients, not just a bunch of crap covered in cheese like most other places around (Santi's excluded). Reasonable, service is fine, nice outdoor seating area. Standard Mexican beer selections, margaritas are pretty good. It just really stands out to us compared to everywhere else in the area (which probably says something about the Mexican food selections in Charleston). The tacos are really good but its hard not to order the Quesadilla del Mar.

  • Joel C.

Standard Mexican place. Passable food. I thought the meat in the tacos was kind of bland. The salsa was ok but nothing great. The service was good but that was the highlight of the meal.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
